Happy almost spring friends!
Just rolled my clock ahead an hour and now just waiting for the weather to warm up and stay that way! With the time change I actually look forward to leaving work because the sun will be out still and that usually will lead me to have more energy to get out and do something after work.
To celebrate the time change I took the longer sun hours to venture up to Asado coffee shop up on Irving Park.
This coffee shop has been on my hit list since starting this blog A YEAR AGO! (Yay happy one year anniversary to me and the Blonde Bean Head) Hard to believe where to time has gone, actually it’s been spent exploring the city I love while staying well caffeinated. Time well spent if you ask me and I’m ready for whatever year two has in store!
Since Irving Park Road is a bit of a hike from our apartment I agreed to drive there after we had finished our grocery shopping in the morning. Best way to get my coffee partner onboard is to not totally exhaust him with a long hike just for coffee. So after getting our weekly grocery shopping out of the way we drove up to check out Asado coffee.
A little back knowledge on Asado, up until my visit all I knew about the coffee roasting cafe was that there was only one location they roasted bean at, this Lakeview one and they had a small coffee counter down in the Loop across the street from the DePaul center on Jackson. (See picture below, it’s the cutest thing in the whole world)
Also, if you were to get on Yelp and look for coffee in the city it will always come up in the top 5 places to visit. So you can see why I was so interested in going, but the LakeView location is literally just the coffee roasting house and bar, there is really no room to hangout inside. It;s a get your coffee and go kind of place, so not ideal to visit in the winter. This has also been part of the reason I have never made it to Asado yet, have lined up my visit with the seasons very well.
Today’s weather is perfect and the sun it out and shining.
The outside of the cafe looks like it would be a small hut in Mexico, the bright yellow wood panels with the blue window trim really make it stand out among the red brick building neighbors. In addition to the bright colors there is also a half picnic table directly outside for people to sit outside and enjoy their coffee at.
Fun ASADO fact – Asado in Spanish means roast. Good name choice for a coffee roasting cafe.
Today was surprisingly not too crowded, there was just one other customer in the shop and she already had her coffee and was just chatting with the barista.
This barista was hands down the nicest barista I have encountered to date! His name was Ryan and he was extremely helpful in explaining what the drinks were and how they were made. We also got to chatting about Asado in general, this is where I found out that Asado no longer owned and supplied the coffee stand outside of the DePaul center, this had ended within the past year and Asado has now expanded to a second location in River North. This Lakeview location is still the “home” and is where all the coffee bean roasting takes place. Ryan also was sharing his knowledge of Asado’s owner, Kevin, who is genuine down to earth old man that just loves his coffee and started this shop by being the first in Chicago to older serve drip coffee and espresso based drinks. You will NOT find an automatic coffee maker in any of his locations, its drip or nothing folks.
I opted for the Cafe con Leche, which both the other lady in Asado and Ryan claimed it to be the best on the menu as well as in the whole city. SOLD! I’ll give it a go. I can attest, this was hands down one of the greatest drinks I have had in a long time. It was the perfect amount of sweet to espresso, I could have downed the whole drink and asked for another. It was scrumptious. I would say second best, I am bias and still love Ipsento’s latte.
While waiting for our drinks I was checking out the coffee roasting equipment in the back of the shop, it just amazes me and I need to find a class that will teach me how all the parts function and how to truly roast the best coffee beans. There are a few at home ways to roast coffee beans, but I think it would be cool to take a class and use an actual roaster. Ryan was telling us the Kevin, is just that much of a coffee nerd that if we called him and wanted to come hangout and roast coffee beans he would love to teach us his tricks. I think I’ll be giving Kevin a call! Groovey!
Between all the chitchat and Ryan working on both of our drinks neither of us could remember if we payed or not, insead Ryan just gave us our coffees on the house! Which of course makes them even that much better, free always ups adds value to a coffee shop visit, cause I mean HELLO, it’s free! A small victory.
That aside, Asado its an awesome coffee shop, I am looking forward to visiting many more times to come, they will get their money back from me! Next I’ll have to check out the River North location, has anyone payed Asado a visit in River North?
For all you Cubs fans Asado is just a few blocks north of Wrigley Field and I highly recommend paying it a visit, maybe after a long summer afternoon game you need a pick-me-up after. Head to Asado cause it’s 100% worth the trip.
