Another weekend another coffee adventure! This time weekend I found a place that makes empanadas while roasting and serving up house coffee!
DOWN! Any place that has coffee and some form a mexican fare I will be there in a heartbeat!
La Strada happens to be out in Wicker Park just down the street from Bang Bang Pie and Biscuits! Yummy! So it was hard to not stop there for a biscuit, but when a place is serving fresh house made empanadas how could you pass up.
Pulling up to the cafe I couldn’t believe how hidden it was, I have actually driven and walked past it a handful of times and never once noticed. This morning though the patio seating was set up and people were sitting out there enjoying their coffee. It’s a small cafe with a few tables in the front along the window, but lucky for us it was not busy at all. The two baristas behind the counter were extremely welcoming and were quick to take our order and answer any questions me might have.
I right away started inquiring about the espresso beverages, the sizes they offered and the number of shots that went into each. As for the special flavors on the menu nothing today was jumping out at me in particular so I landed on ordered a small iced latte with and extra shot of espresso and half the milk.
Why half the milk you ask? I order a Starbucks iced latte during the week one day and was completely disappointed in it. Practically all milk that is all I was taking and it was disgusting. So now with iced drinks I always ask for half the milk they typically would add. I do not care if my drink ends up being smaller in the end, I would rather it not taste like milk. YUCK!
Danny eyed the tiramisu flavor on the menu and of course had to give it a try, this is by the way his favorite dessert.
The sad part to this adventure, the empanadas ended up not happening, we showed up so early in the morning that they weren’t ready yet! AHHHHH. CUrse being a morning person and arriving right when a place opened. Granted I do feel they should have been a little more prepared. We could have waiting for them to cook, but there were other things Danny and I were both trying to accomplish for the day. We also both had the idea of then walking up to Bang Bang for a biscuit instead. Horriblly enough Bang Bnag was not open yet this fine SUnday morning, though all the workers were in the kitchen prepping and cooking. Props to them for at least getting ready to open. Sadly Danny and I left tummies empty that morning.
BUT at least we had some coffee. Though not the best coffee I have ever had, I would certainly go back for another experience because I found the baristas extremely friendly and helpful. When giving us our drinks they even waited for us to take our first sip to make sure we thought it was alright.
I am not the type to bluntly tell someone I do not like the taste of their coffee to their face like that, they were so helpful and it not like it was the worst coffee. But mine still had too much milk in it and Danny’s altte was a touch too sweet, even for his taste. This does not change the fact that I would come back for those empanadas because all the reviews online rave about how wonderful these are! I’ll just go for a smoothie and tea as a beverage instead!
