Philz Coffee

Welcome to Chicago Philz!

Let me just start by saying this quite possibly might be my all time favorite coffee in Chicago right now. I am so thrilled they are here and that i finally got to try them too. We first got our Philz exposure while in DC for our vacation back in April, but sadly never had a chance to make it there.

When deciding to go to Philz, I actually had NOT realized we were showing up on opening day! I was laying in bed searching for coffee on Yelp, when I saw Philz was showing up in Wicker as opened. Granted I should have checked the dates, cause  while reading the yelp reviews they did all mention it was from the soft open, but I just assumed these were old and clearly Philz was open by now. Welp literally just opened and we quickly figured this out when we drove past with the line stretching out the door and a bunch of balloons lining the street.

Once we got in line it didn’t seem all that bad and certainly, as the sign noted, was moving quickly. While waiting there were plenty of employees walking around and talking to people, educating them on the coffee, menu and Philz in general. They were even passing out Philz Coffee passport books. You can check off each coffee bean as you try them all! Being the coffee junkie that I am this was so exciting and I was geeking out.

Day instantly made!

While flipping through the booklet Danny and I both knew we wanted to try teh Philz, mint mojito. This already had a fan following and got raving reviews from everyone on line. Once we actually got to be next to placing our order the gentleman chatting with people in line strike up conversation with us trying to navigate what kind of coffee fans we were and our taste lines and dislikes. Aso checking if we had ever been to Philz before or not. Clearly picking up on us being a couple of newbies he recommended we absolutely try the mint mojito since that was iced, but since we also enjoyed hot coffee he recommended we try the Tesora made the philz way.

We were both sold, why not get two different coffees and sample both! I think I was a little nervous just in case we both disliked the recommendation. But it did sound fabulous and according to the coffee passport it took phil 7 years to perfect and is the foundation of his coffee. So cool, nothing like starting out with the true O.G. Basically the drink is hot coffee with light cream and honey simple, but clearly made to perfection. The mint mojito is an iced coffee with freshly muddled mint, brown sugar and light cream. Its served with a fresh mint spring too! YUM! Drooling I could not wait for either.

Now, the thing that truly makes Philz unique is the fact that they brew literally each individual coffee order right there. No coffee is pre made and sitting on a warmer here. Because of this the wait time might be atouch longer than your typical coffee shop, rest assured it’s worth the wait. But this is where things got a little confusing and crowded while waiting for your coffee, no one really knew where to go while waiting and you wouldn’t actually pat till you receive your coffees too. It was all around a congested flow. I think it would be better on a less busy day.

Coffees up! We each took a sip of both before running from the counter to a table so we could be out of the way. Once at the table I could not hold myself back from taking a sip of each one after another. I still couldn’t tell you which one I liked more, they were both amazing cups of coffee that where unique and delicious in their own way. AMAZING!

We were both super happy with the two coffee we had. Though we both found it interesting that though delicious, they didnt 100% taste like coffee, well more in the case of mine. The mint was so strong and delicious I think it almost left me forgetting I was drinking coffee. Either way of the drinks were mid blowing delicious and after fininigh them I wanted to go back right away for more. I might say this line often, but I literally told Danny that I wanted to come back even on Sunday morning to try more coffee.

Philz is also planning to open two other locations in Chicago! So excited for them and can’t wait to come back to try more.
