I have FINALLY made it to Werewolf Coffee bar! This cafe is borderline impossibly to visit, they are not open on the weekends and they are only open from 7am – 4pm! And not being conveniently located to my office just makes it impossible for me to get to. But they have been receiving so much hype for their Activated Charcoal Latte and all the beautiful glitter they add to it. Basically it’s the beauty of the Limitless Lattes, but they started it! Heading to try the OG of glitter lattes in Chicago! The honor.
Why am all the way out here in Noble Square on a Thursday morning is the real question. Danny and I are off to Nashville next weekend and so we are trying a new boarding group to see how Duncan likes it. They like to have the pup come in before they actually have to stay the night, totally makes sense. Werewolf happens to be right around the corner from the doggie boarding center we are using. It’s like the universe wanted us to try this cafe!
Werewolf is located in a very industrial area and honestly I can’t image it gets much foot traffic either, bit of a bummer for them but everyone that uses that doggie daycare around the corner clearly knows about it cause the cafe is pup friendly! We will have to bring Duncan here when we pick him up after his over nights.
We showed up a little early, dropping Duncan off and touring the new boarding facility was actually much faster than I anticipated. So we waiting outside Werewolf waiting for it to open, clearly both in desperate need of coffee. When I saw the barista unlock the doors I almost bolted right in, but game them till 7am to complete the full setup.
We were the first customers of the morning and both ordered a double shot activated charcoal latte. This activated charcoal latte has become quite trendy and popular. It’s certainly hit the social media world withe the glitter decoration that gets added to the top after the milk has been added.
So what really is activated charcoal? Yeah I had to do my research as well, not being entirely sure, but I have order myself a few drinks in the past that contain this. Seems best to at least know a little bit about what I am drinking and putting into my body, so in a nut shell activated charcoal is actually considered to be a universal antidote and it promoted as a natural treatment. A few of the benefits noted are whitening teeth, lowering cholesterol and curing hangovers. Like a one size fits all gig! Activated charcoal is a fine black powder made from bone char, coconut shells, peat, petroleum coke, coal olive pits and sawdust. Sounds disgusting right!? Why would anyone drink this, well first you have to activate it by processing it at very high temperatures. This is nothing like the charcoal we use with our grills, thank goodness.
Double shot activated charcoal lattes with glitter to go I was so looking forward to getting a taste of this latte, I recently just had a version of this serves from a breakfast cafe out in the suburbs so was looking forward to getting a direct comparison of the two versions. This latte was quite yummy, granted I really could use mine hotter, personal preference. But the overall flavor a subtle sweetness the activated charcoal latte brings to the drink was wonderful! The extra shot was needed to help balance the milky flavor, I actually could have gone for a third shot! My one complaint would be not being a fan of the glitter, it doesn’t really have a taste but it does have a sandy like texture that you can feel for a split second when you sip. It dissolves quickly, but I think I would request without next time. No matter how beautiful it might make the latte.
After the coffees I was dropped off at the L and quickly on my way to the office to jump start this Thursday, literally microwaved my latte the second I got in. I think the equipment was still heating up at Werewolf this morning cause even Danny complained that once he got home he felt his drink was already a little too cool.
Has anyone else been to Werewolf for their activated charcoal lattes or have you tried them elsewhere?
I know Limitless is known for also serving and decorating their lattes quite similarly.
