Bakery at Fat Rice

Happy 4th of July weekend and Happy Birthday America!

What better way to celebrate the holiday weekend than by checking out a coffee shop and bakery that specialize in making a Chicago style hot dog bun! Sign me up, Bakery at Fat Rice have been on my list of must hits, probably from when the list first originated. It has taken this long in part to the weekend hours it not opening till 11am, for me I need my coffee well before 11am! So my patience for caffeine in the morning is what has kept me from getting here sooner.

Bakery at Fat Rice is out in Logan Square right on Diversey, they bake a daily an array of sweet and savory morning treats heavy influenced by the Portugese and Macau culture. This also having an influence on drink options as well.

Originally in picking this bakery/coffee shop I was a little more interested in the food and figured I would grab a simple house coffee to of course help wash it all down, but upon getting to the bakery there was a whole entire drink menu that had a bunch of specials I had never heard of! Honestly the baristas and bakers this morning are such a highlight of this trip as well because they were tal gem in answering all of the crazy silly questions I had on just about everything on the menu. First I needed the full food run down, then I  needed to understand what the drinks were and finally I of course tried to personalize my beverage and if that was even possible.

Eventually we landed on order 4 samples of savory pastries, on iced coffee for Danny and one double duck for me! The Double Duck was essentially a mix of half black tea and half coffee with the option to add cream. Of course after hearing this and seeing how unique it was to this bakery I could pass on the opportunity to give it a try. The barista recommend I add slight cream to the drink so this is what I went with.

Drinks and food were up in a  flash, we decided to sit at the window seat and everything came out an elementary looking cafeteria try! It was adorable and awesome. My drink was crazy, in a wonderful kind of crazy way! When first sipping you get the kick and initial taste of coffee, than as you swallow the after flavor is of the black tea. And this had a strong black tea flavor to it. The drink was amazing and mind blowing, I had to restrain myself from just chugging the whole thing in one gulp.

Has anyone else see a Double Duck coffee drink sold in cafes in Chicago? I haven’t but would love to find a place, possibly closer to where I live that does. Yujm it was a wonderfully refreshing summer coffee drink!

Will be back for more double duck and all the morning pastries. By the way, everything that we samples was mouth wateringly delicious! Would eat that a million times over as well.
