Good Morning! What a beautiful spring morning it is today. If you’re reading this I hope you’re cradling your mug of coffee breathing in the fresh spring air!
This morning I woke up determined to use the French Press for coffee. It has been a trial and error process for my boyfriend and I in mastering the right measurements. I hate to admit he has perfected his measurements while I’m still playing around with mine.
Lucky for you I’ll share a combination of our tips and tricks to mastering the perfect cup.
1.Grinding – This is probably the sole most important tip of brewing a good cup of french press coffee. Pre-ground coffee beans will absolutely not work here, the grounds are too fine and will slip past the filter spiral plate and mesh and then into your cup of coffee in the end. Don’t over grind your coffee beans, I find it helpful to grind a little shake the grinder and pulse for another few second. Having large chunks is perfectly fine here.
2.Water – For a french press it is up to you to bring the water to a boil and get it to your desired temperature. Initially for me this was the most daunting. We have found it best to bring the water to an active boil and turn the heat off and let it sit a minute.
You cannot make coffee without water, because water is what draws the coffee flavor out of the coffee grounds. This process is called extraction. This is where the water temperature is essential, if the water temperature is too hot you run the risk an over extraction, leaving you coffee tasting bitter. Though if the temperature is not hot enough, you have yourself a weak and sour tasting cup of coffee. Until you have found a route that works for you there is no shame in taking the temperature of your water before pouring it over the coffee grounds. Any temperature between 195-205 degree is ideal for coffee flavor extraction.
3.Measurements – The ratio of water to coffee of course is very important, but is also all based on personal preference as well. My boyfriend and I both love our coffee dark and on the strong side. This will take a lot of trial and error to find what ratio you find most appealing,if you prefer a stronger cup of joe feel free to use the ratio we have come to love. We do 6 tablespoons of coffee grounds to 4 cups of water.
Once you pour the hot water into the press over the chunky coffee grounds we found it’s best to let it sit for 6 minute.

My first cup a freshly pressed coffee was just two years ago when my boyfriend and I went to Au Cheval for brunch. If you have never been or heard of Au Cheval they are famous for their mouthwatering burgers! It is a must try if you are ever in the West Loop of Chicago. Upon our first visit when asked what we would like to drink, my boyfriend before I could even answer, said we will take a pot of the French Press. Fun fact: my boyfriend has past employment history as a barista and loves coffee just about as much as I do. Me, having never had a cup of French Pressed coffee was not sure what we were in for, but a WHOLE POT! Yeah, I wasn’t going to dispute.
Fast forward, that first sip was unbelievable, life-changing, I was instantly in my happy place. The noise of the busy brunch hotspot no longer matter, it took every ounce of control in me to not jump up and happy dance around the whole restaurant, burst into song like a musical. I was engulfed in the fresh aroma of the freshly ground coffee beans and the temperature was spot on. I could easily have had the whole pot to myself.
