Hello Old Town Chicago! We have officially made the move to our new apartment and of course in desperate need of some good coffee to keep up energized through this move.
Cocoa + Co is just up the street from us now and happened to be the most pleasant impromptu visit!
Cocoa + Co’s name basically give away what they are know most for, but we have seen people on the streets walking around with La Colobre coffee cups and finally were able to pinpoint this as the shop brewing the good stuff. For our visit I went in planning for the menu to be pretty basic, offering a few of the classics but naturally more of an entasis on the chocolate and baked goods. Just walking past the shop outside you’re greeted with the delicious chocolate aroma that will make you hungry instantly for chocolate, such a rich sweet smell.
When walking in you’ll notice chocolate bars from around the world line the walls and their fresh chocolate hand dipped goodies and freshly baked pastries line the counter. Impossibly to miss! They even have a table full of pre wrapped chocolate gift baskets for the taking, I think this is pretty standard for all chocolate shops to do, who wouldn’t want a chocolate gift basket anyways?
Heading to the counter to order our drinks I was pleasantly surprised by their drink offerings, much more than I expected and some very creative latte flavors too! A few being; Lumberjack – Maple, cinnamon and smoke, Black Figgy Pepper -vanilla, black pepper and mission fig, Endless Summer – tangerine and lavender and finally a Cleopatria’s Secret – cardamom and rose.
Wild right! Took me by surprise that is for sure, also through me for a loop on what I wanted to order. As of late I have had a huge craving for figs, random I know but how good were fig newton bars as a snack growing up. Yum I just can’t get them out of my head, so I went with the Black Figgy Pepper latte, Danny went with the Lumberjack latte.
While waiting for our drinks we were chatting with the barista a little, I was curious if all the chocolate dipping took place here in this shop and if it was all done each morning! What we learned is actually the owner of Cocoa + Co actually uses another kitchen/location for all the prep of her chocolate and baked goodies, then they are brought over, nearly fresh every day to this shop. She has hopes of opening another location soon! TBD on when and where that will be though. Hope she is able to get it off the ground cause this is suchs a sweet treat to have in hte neighborhood.
Latte reviews are in, hands down the winner was Danny’s Lumberjack latte, the maple and cinnamon where a sweet perfect blend with the espresso. I wouldn’t be able to drink a full beverage of this flavor, not a maple flavor fan, but the few sips I stole where quite delicious and very strong on the maple. He loved it.
Unfortunately I feel my fig latte fell flat, I was not tasting any fig or pepper. To be honest not even much vanilla either now that I am sitting here thinking back to it. It was a good latte, not too sweet and the espresso came through nicely but there was no extra dazzle with the flavor I was hoping for. Maybe next time I’ll have to try for a different flavor, something that might be more strong. I can reason with fig being a weaker flavor overall, when compared to something like maple, but the pepper I would have expected a little kick from.
Would 100% still come here for chocolate and coffee regardless of the fig letting me down.
