Goddess and the Baker

Today is the day, I finally got myself to try bulletproof coffee! A little behind the trend these days but thank you Goddess and the Baker for still offering this crazy radicular drink on your menu.

First I think we need to start off with what is bulletproof coffee, it’s  a huge “health” fad that has literally gone viral. Recently has died down but still its a fad that took off for some time. Basically it’s coffee brewed any which way you like, then blended in a blender with no more than two tablespoons of grass fed butter. And wallah you have a bulletproof coffee.

What are your first thoughts after hearing what goes into it? Honestly, mine were of how gross that must taste to blend BUTTER into your coffee! I am not a huge fan of butter to begin with so to me this was just crazy talk. Butter is of the same dairy family as milk and cream so I guess it does not seem that far off in the large scheme of things but still, a little off all the same. I initially heard about it online and how there was quickly a large following of people that found it to be delicious and enjoyed all the health benefits it offered.

Health benefits? But it’s butter, grass fed or not. To me butter is butter. And this is an argued beverage, whether or not it’s actually healthy for you or not. For those that are a fan they will argue that the healthy fat is good for the brain, supplying you with  more energy in the morning and suppressing your appetite. While on the other side of the spectrum people will argue that having a daily dose of butter and fats in your coffee is not healthy and there is no clear evidence that this is beneficial in any way. Though they will also admit with the new fad there is also no clear sign of it being unhealthy just yet either.

A few of the girls at work have tried the beverage before and we have talked about the taste and whether or not they actually feel the effects of drinking bulletproof coffee in the morning. To sum up our conversations the bulletproof coffee slightly resembled the look of a latte and the initial small is not that of butter but just a cup of coffee. The flavor has always been described to me as interesting. What in the world does interesting taste like!? I needed to find out.

Planned a coffee date after work with one of the best friends Danielle to try catch up and officially try this coffee out. Maybe not the best time to try a coffee that claims to give you lots of energy, end of the day is what you want to be winding down not hyping yourself up but I wasn’t too worried. Anyone I know that has tried this came back claiming to have EXTRA energy.

I have been to Goddess and the Baker once before, for lunch I wanted to try their avocado toast but have never once taken the time to try their coffee. They are down the street fm my office and a small corner shop that no matter the time of day is always busy, even at 5pm on a Wednesday it was a tad tricky to find and pick a good seat. We only came for the coffee today though just looking at their pastries has always left my mouth watering.

Danielle ordered just a latte and I the bulletproof coffee, while we sat waiting for our drinks to be made I caught he rup on the whole bulletproof coffee fad and why I was so interested in trying it.

Coffee delivered and my excitement is now through the roof just looking at this coffee! Confirmed, you cannot smell the butter in the coffee  and with the blending it has a slight froth on the top and does look like a latte just without the cute foam art.

First baby sip, straight butter and you can taste it immediately. By feel I mean on you lips, it left them feeling like I just applied chapstick. Interesting indeed adn not a fan of the butter flavor right away. After letting the coffee cool I was able to take  a bigger sip and get to the coffee that is under the thin layer of butter foam that formed on top. The mix of coffee with butter is better but still just interesting. After ever sip I was left licking my lips trying to get the butter oil off them.

Overall I would say the coffee was only okay, I was not left feeling extra energetic, though I will admit it did suppress my appetite. For it being 630pm when we left  should have been starving for dinner but I was not. Not sure I would order this coffee again, glad I took the time to actually give it a try, I didn’t finish the cup so I enjoyed it enough but as a daily beverage? I don’t think so.

Goddess And the Baker though as a coffee shop in general is the perfect place to come and catch up with friends, they had some great oldies playing in the background and you don’t feel bad about talking loud since the whole place is live with chatter and energy. The baked goods do look delicious too, will need to come back and try a muffin or a scone

Have any of you tried or heard of bulletproof coffee? Would love to know what you thought of it when you first tried. Is it worth having a second time now that I know a little better what to expect?
