Happy blizzard day Chicago!
Blizzard = extra coffee needed. Metric Coffee did the trick as we battled the snowy streets to get out to the suburbs for our friends surprise birthday party.
Metric Coffee is out in the neighborhood called West Fulton Market, Danny would argue otherwise, but I promise aside from possibly wanting a car to get out there you are in the heart of an industrial neighborhood. Basically take Fulton Street west and you will hit Metric Coffee just past Ashland.
Metric Coffee has a great story! Founded by the founder of Caffe Streets and former manager of Intelligentsia! So much coffee background and passion just there! Metric was founded in 2013 and the name actually has an equally great story, Inspired by the word metric “a system or standard of measurement,” They also received their 1960s German Probat roaster, came to them with nuts and bolts in Metric units. Fit like a puzzle they would land on Metric as their name!
All their coffee is roasted there at the West Fulton location and entering the cafe you can smell that instantly! The cafe is not large at all! Absolutely meant to be a spot for people to run in and grab their coffee to go, there is the coffee counter and then a few stools along the wall directly opposite. I think this place is more popular in the summer with outdoor seating and it looks like they can open the garage doors and have a completely open store front. So cool! Considering the weather there is no shocker we were the only ones in the cafe when we got there. Snow certainly deterring people from getting on the roads.
I of course had to ask and I guess typically they are much busier! That is awesome and a great sign already, very straightforward menu with you standar cafe drink options, not to much frill. I actually went with a vanilla latte, the sweetner was actual vanilla bean and made in house.
While waiting for the drinks to be made I was checking out the roaster and reading all the bean roasting options they were selling. SO MANY OPTIONS! All of them sounded so delicious too! I needed to try some of them, knowing Danny is more a medium roast fan and since this was our first time here I landed on getting the House Blend – notes of raisin, caramel and cashew! Drooling already! Will start with this but hte dark espresso blends also sounded so delicious!
Another really interesting offering Metric had was a huge bag of cold brew in the cooler, I’m talking a bag large enough to quench a brunch party thirst! How awesome and in a hage with a spout, like boxed wine. This instantly has me wishing it was summer and I could buy a bag to have in my fridge for the mornings, you better believe i’ll be back in the summer to sample some of this! Such a cool idea, Danny thought it would be perfect to take on camping trips now too!
Latte ready we boogies back to the car so we could hit the road again before the snow started again. Now I have not had a vanilla latte in ages it feels like, I am always checking for the special flavors that are harder to come by, but this vanilla latte was the perfect sweet without being too much or making you feel like you drank a cup of vanilla sugar! It was very good and I would highly recommend if you’re at all a vanilla fan to give this a try.
I have since visiting seen Metric Coffee sold in grocery stores, has anyone else tried their coffee outside of the House Blend and have recommendations?
The House Blend was a perfect medium roast, but would love to try something darker next!
