I have found Danny’s favorite coffee shop and also the sole reason he would be willing to move to Wicker Park with me. Yes, Scone City is literally that good and worth it; I am giving it my stamp of approval.
Woke up this morning feeling up to mini coffee adventure. I had done a good job of hitting all the local shops that are convenient for me to walk to in a reasonable amount of time. So this mornings adventure calls for jumping in the car for a short drive. Wicker Park here we come.
It’s really not a far drive at all, considering it’s still so early in the morning too we were able to get to Scone City in less than 10 minutes and were able to park right across the street. Entering the shop the two working behind the counter were beyond friendly, they were singing having a good time and joking with each other. Extremely helpful too, letting us know what was good scone wise, which were their favorites, shop favorites and also which ones were only seasonal.
Kid you not people Scone City has the most scone options I have ever seen in my entire life! Savory, sweet a mix, fruity, spicy or glazed. Some require being heated up other are served at room temperature. The options and decisions were extremely overwhelming. I kind of wanted to sample them all, but I’ll save some for another day.
We ordered one savory and one sweet – jalapeno cheddar and lemon blackberry. The jalapeno one was served warm and OH MY GOD was it delicious, the warm goody cheese was to die for with the kick of the pepper. YUM! The lemon blackberry was a more traditional scone in the sense that it was dry and sweet and totally packed with berries which I loved because it brought the scone to life in your mouth! This was one of their top sellers and I can see why.
As for our drinks even the amount of options here had me mind blown! I think I say this on every post, but I am always partial toward honey lavender lattes. It’s the subtle sweetness mixed with the steamed milk and espresso that just have me falling in love with it everytime I see it on a menu. Yes, this is what I order and it was absolutely divine! I think a tear was shed when the last sip was consumed.
Danny typically will gravitate toward vanilla favor when he is wanting something sweet, or actually hazelnut. It’s between the two for him, Scone City had a vanilla bean latte. No syrup used, just the sweetness from an actual vanilla bean, I sampled and it was one of the best vanilla lattes I have ever had. Sweep without overpowering the expresso. Our drinks were amazing, they roast and serve Half Witt coffee beans and this has gradually turned into my favorite coffee bean I have found them being served at a few other coffee shops in the city and have never had a bad experience.
Now that you have to lowdown on the food and drink at Scone City time to talk about the decor! Upon entering the cafe there is seating along the window, a few tables and chairs and then bar seating along the coffee bar.
That is just the seating up fornt, it you wonder to the back of the cafe there is a whole lounge area with booth seating, more comfortable looking chairs and plenty of table space for people to work, hangout and eat scones. There was a recurring character that kept popping up in art around the cafe, it’s Hebru Brantley.
Had to look him up and get a little more insight, for those not familiar he is an artist that uses his character to narrate and address complex life ideas around nostalgia, the mental psyche, power and hope. Some very deep and interesting topic to use a cartoon character to illustrate. I really enjoy it though, taking some serious topics and trying to humanize them,. Make it more relatable and something that everyone can understand without a lot of background knowledge needed. At least for understanding the general gist.
Overall this is a great cafe that I will absolutely be coming back too cause there are at least a hundred more scone flavors for me to try! Yum and once the weather gets nice I’ll be able to bring the pup and sit on the patio! Oh I can’t believe I forgot to mention; they make puppy friendly scones!!
PSA – bring the pups on down to Scone City, you will not regret.
