Summer must be upon us, I see cold brew coffee EVERYWHERE.
Besides iced coffee the best part of summer is enjoying the warmth and fresh air in the morning. It’s when life is beginning to wake up and become alive for the day; greeted by the chirping birds, sun and the smell of flowers. What crazy person enjoys the wee hours of the morning, this crazy coffee lady. I love being the first into coffee shops, it’s the small victories in life!
The early hours of the morning are one of the most enjoyable times to be out walking and exploring. Freely able to walk the sidewalks without dodging people, strollers, dogs or the beloved window gawkers.
It has become my favorite part of the day, able to get outside and enjoy the crisp calm refreshing air and naturally enjoying a fresh cup of coffee. Today my coffee infatuation has taken me to East Lakeview to check out Bow Truss Coffee Roasters.
This adorable coffee shop is snuggled between an Asian Kitchen and sushi shop on Broadway, which at any other hour of the day, would be a very busy street, but at 9 a.m. it was deserted and peaceful. I nearly walked right past it! I was enjoying the sunshine and my walk a bit too much, but the shop does not initially pop out at you. Once inside the calm and peacefulness vibes continue. Bow Truss Coffee shop is quite spacious with plenty of seating available; counter seating along the window, a few circle tables in the middle, long picnic tables on one wall, a few couches, and long community work tables in the back.
After my walk I was fairly parched and needing some caffeine preferable something cold. I noticed they had two iced coffee options, the first a slow drip and the second a nitrogen infused iced coffee. I had never seen nitrogen infused coffee so I had to ask what it was all about.
Nitro Coffee
It began in Portland, Oregon with the desire to bring a richer and creamier flavor to cold brew coffee without losing the flavor. The thought was pumping tiny nitrogen bubbles into the coffee would help enhance the flavor, turns out they were right. Similar to the carbonation you experience when drinking a beer, this nitro coffee is fizzy and carbonated. Though most beers are actually infused with tiny carbon dioxide bubbles, stouts are more often pumped with nitrogen bubbles giving it that thicker smoother stout texture. That is exactly how this coffee is, thick creamy and no need for cream as it is already pretty sweet.
Served in a much smaller portion, nitrogen coffee is meant to be enjoyed rather quickly. The best way to enjoy nitro coffee is while it’s still carbonated. Also, be warned this coffee has high caffeine levels or at least the theory is that the nitrogen bubble lead to faster absorption.
Bow Truss nitro coffee has a very rich chocolate taste to it. Reminded me instantly of drinking a beer, the fizzy bubbles slide along the sides of your mouth and back down your throat. Quite delicious and refreshing, I think initially I expected it to be served over ice, but this cold brew coffee is served “straight up”. Being the type who enjoys slowly sipping her coffee I don’t see this being a common order for me, though I highly recommend everyone give it a try. Especially those who are a fan of beer, this coffee is for you.
Along with the nitro coffee I also order the standard slow drip iced coffee, this was the caffeine thirst quencher. Cool delicious, rich, chocolaty and served over ice as a standard ice coffee is.
Bow Truss has a naturally very sweet chocolate flavor to their coffee and can easily be enjoyed without adding extra sugar cream. The shop is perfect for coming and enjoying the peace and quiet with a deliciously rich cup of coffee. Also, for all you gamers, there is an old school multicade game that has Pac-Man on it! So come, kick back, drink coffee, enjoy the peace and play some Pac-Man at this local coffee shop this summer.
