Hello Chicago summer! The weather forecast this weekend, 90 degrees with 100% chance of sunshine and coffee. This is the first time this year we are breaking into the 90 degree weather. Get ready to hear all the complaints. I don’t understand people, they complain when it is too cold and then first weekend of summer weather everyone is complaining they will be hiding indoors to avoid the heat! Does that make any sense? I have been waiting so patiently for the arm weather, my casper skin could use a little warmth and sunshine! I was thrilled when I saw this, Danny and Duncan both cried a little.
This weekend though was also an extra special treat, my sister Ruth is training for the New York marathon and also apart of an avid running group that will have morning runs on the weekend and sometimes they are in the city. This weekend happened to be one of those runs and we coordinated to meet at Department of Coffee and Social Affairs after for some coffee!
I am just blown away at how quickly places change in the city, in the blind of an eye stores, shops, restaurants will open and close and move right along. Department of Coffee and Social Affairs is at the corner Halsted and Diversey, a bit north of where we use to live, but Danny and I were frequents up here making trips to visit friends and go to Trader Joes, I was pleasantly surprised to see this coffee shop here. If only it had been where while we lived in the area, that would have been amazing!
We drove up to meet Ruth at 8am and I was so excited to have a new visitor join me on a cafe adventure, none of my family members have made a coffee trip with me for the first time. I have taken them back to a few of my favorites though. The outside and the name of this coffee shop all make it sound like it would be a school college, so it does not make it the first building that would catch your eye and make you want to wonder in. I actually was a bit hesitant when Danny first suggested it as a good option. Do not let the name fool you, this is a killer coffee shop!
The barista was super welcoming and friendly the moment we walked in, welcoming us with a smile and happy to answer all our questions. I was curious about where the beans and all the delicious organic pastries were from. All locally sources and the beans are fair trade beans meaning they too are sourcing beans from all different regions on the world. So everytime you come here there is a good chance they will be roasting a different bean each time. Danny order a cappuccino, Ruth and iced Americano and I got a cortado, this one was made with orange zest and OAT MILK! (cant stop, wont stop).
The barista was the absolutely man though, making each drink individually and taking his time with each, it also gave us the time to sit and chat! This cafe would be the perfect place to come sit and work, plenty of seats and tables to go around, the windows are lined with a bench and stools to optimize all seating space. Again another great cafe with their decorations, exposed bring, fancy chandeliers and wood tables. This cafe had a few more plants in the front windows, soaking up all the sun! The cafe is bright and peaceful, great fo conversations too, we happened to be the only ones in the cafe that morning. Granted it was 8am, most “normal” humans are still sleeping.
My cortado was fabulous! I actually considered ordering another before leaving! The expresso was strong and delicious, the orange zest was the perfect aftertaste and the oat milk was nice for cutting some of the acidity that comes with a shot of espresso. Ruth laughed a little when she saw how small it was but after I made her sample it I think I opened her eyes a little.
Ruth like her americano, said it was perfect drink after her hot long run. Danny claims this was in the top five for cappuccinos so you know this is a pretty good coffee shop. The espresso is just done right, strong and the perfect size too, I would say it was a double but it was larger and a single shot you would get from Starbucks.
Overall it was a great morning getting coffee with family and enjoying a coffee adventure with a new face!
