Happy Father’s Day to all the wonderful fathers out there! Huge shout of course to my pops Steve!
Regrettable this coffee shop visit was not done with my father. He is too bug a soccer fan and with the Women’s World Cup game playing his morning was set. BUT that did not mean Danny and I were not going to miss out on a coffee shop visit. And anyways I owe Danny for being such a wonderful pup father.
Group Up coffee in Greektown here we come! It was actually a bit of a random happening heading here for coffee. We had plans to meet my dad in Pilsen later for taco fest so at one point I was trying to find a coffee shop we could stop at on our way down to meet him. This is how I landed in Greektown, timing this was actually not the case but I am still so glad we made the drive here.
Walking up the cafe I peeked through the windows and it was packed1 Which obviously is a good thing to see for a cafe on a Sunday. It is the weekend and seeing a cafe full in the morning just goes to show how good it is. Was already excited to check it out! Walking in the cafe has it divided into the sitting section on the right room split by a high counter that has snacks and cafe merchandise on it for sale. The coffee counter and bar for ordering and picking up drinks at.
Right away at the coffee counter there were a bunch of greek pastries, probably from one of the fresh local places around the corner! Yum if we hadn’t just ate I might have been a little more interest. But the drink options and coffee choices at this cafe were already overwhelming. I came wanting ice coffee but then as I was reading their specialty lattes I was extremely excited and interested in one of the flavor combinations they had. BUT as I was taking in more of the menu I noticed there was a drink on the menu called Greek Frappe, so now you have my interested considering the neighborhood im in. Had to ask more about this drink.
The barista was so wonderful and helpful in explaining it too. Basically the drink is iced and is a strong amount of instant coffee served over ice and typically with a splash of milk at the end. Not overly sweet and she said strong enough that people will sometimes add more water as they drink it down. It sounded so different from anything I have ever read or heard of so had to try something new.
Danny order a new greek drink too, the freddo cappuccino. The barista explained this as being espresso served over ice and topped with blended ice and milk froth. Also sounded so interesting and like nothing we have ever seen offered at coffee shops before. Could not wait to try both of these drinks.
Mine came out right away and I could not resisting sampling it right away. I literally almost forgot to even take a picture that is how excited I was. It was beyond delicious! Oh my mouth is watering right now just thinking about it. Then Danny’s drink came out, oh my was this so fun looking. You literally saw all the layers the barista described it having! So much fun!
Also one of the most delicious drinks I have ever had! The coffee/espresso was strong but the blended ice and frothed milk really took the bite away and was just perfect and delicious! We were both extremely happy with our choices this morning and the discovery of a new wonderful coffee shop!
Ground Up cafe you can count on us to be back and absolutely be buying your coffee beans to drink more often at home!
Once I got home I also had to Google how to make both of the drinks we had this morning and neither is hard or even actually calls for an espresso machine. Greeks drink very strong coffee, not actual espresso, interesting fake I was learning through my research of other traditional Greek coffee drinks.
Welp my trip to Greece needs to get planned and booked ASAP.
