It’s a “treat yo self” kinda Sunday. Has anyone ever woke up really craving a latte? And I mean a wonderfully hot foamy fresh latte! Well that was me today, I woke up and coffee just wasn’t going to cut it, I needed a little more and a latte was going to be the only thing to satisfy my craving.
BEST espresso is at La Colombe. They focus more on espresso than coffee at their cafes, so you know you’re getting a strong well made espresso drink when you come in. La Colombe here I come!
Lucky for me a cafe opening up right down the street from me on Armitage, this cafe is the new “hot” spot in the neighborhood. I have been a couple of times and it is ALWAYS bursting at the seams with people. Thank goodness I am finally getting around to writing a blog post about it, sometimes I get camera shy and feel bad snapping pictures when there are a bunch of people in the background giving me the side eye.
Side eye (adj.) – giving another person a perplexed, not pleased look.
You see why I don’t always like bothering people with all my camera shot, I try to be a discreet as possible. I also like catching people naturally. Anyone and everyone can smile and pose, but catching the real emotion and the true ambiance of the coffee cafe I think it best.
Growing up my mom would buy my sisters and I a disposable camera for every family vacation we went on. It was part of our vacation, allowing all of us to capture the trip through our own lense and what seeing what we thought to be photo worthy. For those not familiar anymore, or just don’t remember, how a disposable camera works you are only allowed 37 pictures and there are absolutely no do overs. You can’t view how the picture turned out and do a retake, you have to get het picture right the first time and with only 37 pictures you can’t waste a single shot! The other great park about the disposable camera is having to wait to get your pictures, once the file is used up we would take the camera to Walgreens to get eh film developed. This usually would take a few weeks so we didn’t get to enjoy our picture till 2 weeks after we were back from vacation, we got to relive the trip one they all came back. It was so much fun and a huge highlight to my childhood I’ll never forget.
BUT, all that aside, this is where my enjoyment of capturing pictures in their natural state spawned from.
When I got to La Colombe today I was expecting the everyday line and jampacked cafe, but today it was oddly less crowded, majority of the tables were taken up but there was no line! WINNING! Also, with the weather being so beautiful today they had the door wide open and letting the fresh air in.
Today I decided to try La Colombe’s Workshop Espresso latte. Typically I’ll get their more traditional espresso, this had chocolate and nut tones, it’s very rich, heavy and delicious! I asked about the Workshop espresso and it is lighter with notes of maple and orange. How spring is that! YUM! I was so excited to give it a try after that description. The bartis was so pleasant and took his time in explaining the difference and was also so understanding with me drilling him on questions. For the first time today I noticed all the delicious baked goods behind the counter. They have cookies, scones, muffins, biscotti and chocolates! Basically any sweet morning treat you might be craving could be satisfied here.
Fun fact, they source all their baked good from local bakeries in Chicago, so you know they are fresh and delicious. For my next trip I’ll have to give it a try.
While waiting for my latte I took that opportunity to capture pictures of the cafe, due to the sun outside the cafe had no lights on and was just allowing the sun to shine through the windows and fill the cafe. So beautiful and relaxing, they also do not play music in the background so it’s extremely calming to sit in peace and quiet with just low murmurs of others talking around you. As you can see La Colombe is not a large cafe so it can fill up quickly.
Finally my latte was ready, it did not take that long I’m just antsy, it was phenomenal! Hands down one of the best lattes that really hit the spot this morning. I opted for skim milk so I could really get a taste of the orange and maple in the latte, and I think this might have help let it shine through. It was a very light and refreshing latte, the espresso didn’t have that heavy rich chocolate note we are all used to experiencing. This latte was very light, I always complain about there being too much foam, but with this latte I think the balance was perfect and the foam had a sweet citrus orange hit to it that was a the perfect foam stash addition.
Between the two espressos I have no had at La Colombe I would say this is the start and I highly recommend everyone giving it a try. Especially if you are not feeling heavy latte this is the perfect spring and summer pick me up.
Has anyone had other espresso flavors they really loved?
Also, who else grew up using a disposable camera? I seriously wish those were still around like they use to be, I check with Walgreens and they are there, but it cost almost $30 just to develop the film these days! How sad is that? Picture taking will never be the same.
