Loba Pastry + Coffee

Happy holiday all and of course Happy 2019! (we made it!)

On our way out to our parents place to celebrate the holidays Danny and I ventured north to Loba Pastry + Coffee for  a quick morning pick me up.

Let me just start by start by saying Loba has a high reputation for their pastries (I mean it’s in the name) and their matcha latte. I have been on a HUGE matcha kick lately. Don’t get me wrong coffee will forever have my heart and soul, but match is lighter, earthier and has been my go to afternoon pick me up.

FYI matcha has just as much if not more caffeine than a cup of coffee, so the caffeine fix is still met.

Another fun fact about Loba is I would love to live up in this area, it’s a little more family focused, but such a cozy nook of the city. It would probably double our commute to the city and it has turned into quite the hot spot that rent up there is just silly. So I will unfortunately not be living down the street form this cafe. But I will be a frequent visitor.

We drove up since we planned to hit the road shortly after getting our coffee and were able to shoot right up Lincoln Ave to the cafe. It was not busy inside but outside it is very close to the L and a major 6 way intersection so traffic was booming. Loba is not a huge cafe, there are a few stools along the window directly when you walk in and there there is just one community table that I would say comfortable would seat 8 people.

Cozy!

I think we might have showed up a little on the early side as the baked good were not really set up yet and there was nothing really of serious interest to me on display. Kind of a bummer since I know they have huge reviews for a few of their bakes items. Specifically speaking a sourdough muffin? How yummy does that sound!? Well a reason to come visit again!

I warned Danny before arriving they were highly rated for their matcha latte, I didn’t want him to miss out on it! But when we got there they had another interesting latte called the Wold Spice latte. The barista explained it as a latte with hints of anis extract/spice. For those unfamiliar anis it a commonly used flavor in Italian baking, things like cookies and biscottis take to the flavor very well. It’s got a hint of a licorice flavor to it, quite delicious and a perfect subtle sweet treat.

PEOPLE! This is Danny’s favorite spice flavor! When the barista told us that is basically what the wold spice latte had added to it, game over. He was of course going to get that. I stick with the match latte, adding espresso naturally!

Once the latte were ready of course then a few trays of freshly baked treat came out of the back, but by then we were content with just the drinks. The matcha latte was suburb! I touch earthier than I think I would have prefered, but that is only in comparison to the wold spice latte that was hands down mouth watering delicious. I actually regretted not also getting this latte. It was perfect, we also added an extra shot of espresso to this tring and it totally hit the spot, the milk was frothy and light, the expresso strong with teh touch of anis to finish it off. YUM! Thinking about it now makes me want to go back!

Is anyone else a fan of anis spice? Ironically enough it will pop out most frequently around the Christmas holiday times since lots of families get together to bake. There is also a great anis flavored store bought cookie make by Salenos and it’s called Santa’s Favorite. (fitting right?). I would highly recommend grabbing a box of these for you next family get together, big crowd pleaser.
