My stomach and heart fell in love with Nini’s Deli this weekend!
Here is how I happening into the most wonderful cuban deli is all of Chicago: Nini’s!
Saturday morning, the weatherman predicting it to snow all day and accumulate to at least a few inches of good snow, we have plans Sunday in the suburbs and cannot decide whether to treck it out there today or just wait till tomorrow. Danny and I both not being good with decisions we sit on it all morning long, walk the dog, make coffee and breakfast and just sitting on the couch relaxing. Finally come 10am we just decided to wait, there was no real rush to get out there today and once out there neither of us had anything we needed or wanted to do so we would just be sitting around. And just sitting around is the most enjoyable when you’re in the comfort of your own home. This is a proven fact!
With that painful decision behind us now what to do with our day, I recommended we do a grocery run, this way at least we had supply to make diner later that evening. Danny liked the idea and probably senseed my desire to get out for a little bit so we planned to stop by Trader Joes and Marianos! A little more fun for groceries! Chose behind us now we were both starving and in need of some coffee and coffee. I earlier in the day had recommended Nini’s but knew it was a bit of a drive to get there. DAnny being the sweetest made the drive in the mini blizzard to Noble Square so we could check out Nini’s!
Pulling up to the deli it almost didn’t look open, I was a little panices since we made the drive, but Danny said he saw a delivery guy leave so we should be fine. Entering the deli we literally walked instantly into the line! Literally people the lie to order food was at the door! I almost died in disbelief! We slid right in and just buckled down for the wait. Neither of us really knowing that we both had just agreed to an hour long wait.
Nini’s flip the tables like no to her shop I have seen and the customers I think take this into account and don’t hang too long. Anyone that was in line and ordered their food for here always had a seat by the time their food was up! I was so pleasantly surprised and impressed. Danny and I kept going back and forth on whether or not we wanted to eat there or not, we were not too worried about there not being a table, but I ended up making the call to take it home so that we didn’t feel rushed while eating.
Lucky for me with the line being so long we I was able to take my time on the food decissio, coffee was a no brainer, there was the cafe con leche (house made) and I already knew I was going to need an extra shot in that since leche tends to be so sweet.
The couple in front of us in line also made the wait that much more worth it, they were adorable and extremely friendly. As we both neared the front the gentleman turned around with the largest smile on his face and said “ we’re finally so close” it made us all laugh a little, apparently they have been here many times and LOVE this place. He said there wasn’t a bad thing on the menu! He also actually highly recommended the hibiscus tea, which seeing people order this also looked delicious. But might have to wait for another visit as my heart was set on coffee.
We landed on ordering the Kitchen Sink sandwich, clearly the house favorite and it came with everything on it. Oh we also go a chicken empanada too 🙂 When we finally reached the counter I kid you not juan was the absolutely most accommodating person ever! Even though the shop was extremely busy and the line was practically out the door e took the time to make sure he answered any questions we might have about the menu, asked if it was our first time in and then continued to them give us a little history on the deli.
Nini’s is owned by his parents and now managed by him, his mother is Mexican and his father is Cuban. This is where the menu it’s all come from, family recipes that have been perfected and passed down. Everything made fresh to order and there is a change they can sell out in a day which would then force them to close early! But clearly this speaks volumes to quality of the food we just ordered. I started to drool just standing there. Juan made our coffee beverages and they were perfect, the extra shot was certainly needed. At least for me to better balance the sweet to the leche. Danny though it actually tasted better with out!
I would 100% go back for hte leche, on a hot summer’s day I can only image how refreshing this would be. Our sandwich order came up fast and we were able to sneak out. Hurrying home of course now so that could enjoy our food finally.
Unfortunately I did not capture any pictures of the sandwich and I really wish I would have no cause it was mind blowing delicious. All the flavors married together and worked seamlessly! After eating my half I could have gladly gone for another. Oh Can’t forget the empanada, equally as amazing! It was stuffed with chicken and cheese and the dough flavor itself was amazing. Would order a million of these any day.
