Oromo Cafe

Good Morning! It’s a cold February morning here in Chicago and that means a cozy warm coffee shop visit is absolutely needed to brighten up this morning. Oromo Cafe in Ravenswood is our winning cafe this morning!

Our mornings since Duncan has joined the fam jam always start rather early, I’m talking 7:30 at the lastest! We will fall back to sleep for more more Z’s, but that pooch is on the dot needing a potty break at this time pretty much every single day. UGH. Sadly one of us will always have to get up and walk him down for some sweet relief. By 8:30am we are both awake and Duncan starts to get antsy and in need of a walk, sleep time over and out the door we go. With it being the winter months Duncan hasn’t had the pleasure of joining us on our coffee adventures yet, but once the weather gets warmer I have a whole list of hits for the three of us to enjoy. (stay tuned for those!) For today we walked Duncan, gave him breakfast and hit the road to Oromo!

Oromo Cafe is exactly what I look for in new coffee shops to try; all about the vides, creativity with flavors and having a conscious healthy touch! Oromo scores an outstanding 10 on all of these, I don’t think I could say enough good things about this coffee shop right now. What intrigued me the most was their extensive nut milk options and they fact that all ingredients are sourced organically and the milks are made each day in house. So much care and thought into the ingredients that go into their drinks and food.

You won’t find any artificial sweeteners or simple syrups in this coffee shop! Their montra is all about food being medicine for the soul and body, you can gather than instantly after looking at the menu where  whole third of it is dedicated to listing “superfoods” out that can be added to drinks that don’t already incorporate them and the benefits they offer the body. The list consists of: Turmeric, Maca, Ashwaganha, Cacao, Morninga, Spirulina and Camu Camu

Enjoy your reading there! 🙂

Anyways, since it’s my health month, which by the way is going right along, I would say it’s going really really well on the food restrictions we gave ourselves. Haven’t ate out, nothing fired (RIP chicken fingers), no snacking between meals unless its on fruits or veggies, no sweets and no dairy. Just a mini cleanse after all the holidays and my birthday, the only part that has been harder for me at least in no drinking. I’m not a big drinker in general but I do enjoy a good cocktail or glass of wine on the weekends, which that will typically lead to Danny and I picking a place to then go out to eat at which depending will land a whole plate of chicken fingers in front of me. Vicious cycle that I recently have been not fond of so cutting the habit this month.

BUT, back to the point, Oromo has all these amazing homemade nut milks that all sound so perfect in particular the pistachio nut milk. This was really driving the need to visit. We get to the coffee shop around 10:30am and this cafe is bumping! Quite the hot spot and not an open seat in the house. Took a little while to read through the whole menu and really take in all the drink options and flavors, that literally ALL sounded so amazing, already can’t wait to go back and try more but I knew I was here to try some pistachio milk. The pistachio rose latte was the winning choice for me, placing my order the barista kindly informed me they were actually all out of pistachio milk that morning! There was a shortage!! Ahh no, so sad 🙁 As back up I landed on ordering the special that day which was a golden mylk chai latte.

For starters I am OBSESSED with chai flavored anything these days, I literally cannot get enough, it has the perfect amount of sweet and spice that is just the perfect blend in a cup, it’s a strong flavor that I know can be a hit or miss with people. Huge hit for this gal! The real curveball here was a golden mylk, what is this you ask? I had to Google, but its a milk substitute made with; unsweetened coconut milk, ginger, turmeric and peppercorn. Interesting right? Well it was phenomenal!!! Literally the best mixed with the chai spice it had more a spice flavor than sweet and the coconut milk added the perfect amount of cream texture without being too sweet or heavy in the belly after drinking. I wish I had this on tap in my kitchen. Danny ordered the Hazelnut Horchata latte, he is a total sucker for horchata so I was not overly surprised by this choice. It was made with; rice milk, toasted hazelnut milk, coconut milk, cinnamon and vanilla. Also an absolutely mind blowing delicious coffee drink. We both were thrilled with our drinks and we also got so luck and snagged some window seats so were able to sit enjoy our coffees while watching people outside in the cold.

Already planning my next visit, thinkin it will need to not be on the weekend because while looking Oromo up I noticed they have a section of the menu that is dedicated to Turkish coffees and if you order these drinks they will serve it to you in a traditional Turkish coffee shop fashion, in this adorable cup with a turkish delight on the side! I imagine on the weekends they can offer this special touch just based on the popularity of this coffee shop on the weekends. Also will be back in the summer to try their blended drinks too, these were actually rated in the local paper for being some of the best in the city!

Oromo offers so much to the community and to its customers giving that extra care and thought with what they make their drinks with, I greatly appreciate it and clearly so do alot of others. This hands down is my favorite coffee shop in Chicago.
