Caravanserai – Dark Matter

Coffee time! Caravanserai time!

PSA for Chicago coffee drinkers: Dark Matter coffee did it again. They have successfully open another wonderful coffee shop and this time more rooted in their roots!

Caravanserai is a Mexican themed coffee shop in Avondale Chicago that focuses in mexican themed drinks and hot chocolates! They also serve homemade tamales! Duhh! Too fitting. I was so excited to check this place out after reading about the opening and the theme they were looking to emulate in this cafe! It also happens to be just a short drive down the road. Felt like a good place to get some coffee before we get the day started with errands.

Fun fact, caravanserai is Spanish translates to house/inn with a central courtyard and this cafe hits that on the head. From the moment you walk through the door you feel as if you are transported to a warm local inn. Its pure joy just walking in, the coffee bar is in the center of the room and the seating incircles it. They also have sprinkled in plants among the tables and in the ewondows really giving the place an authentic beautiful, cozy vibe. I would gladly take home every single plant here.

Though being still relatively new this is clearly the local hang out and there is the space to support that without the cafe ever feeling overly crowded. There are groups of families, couples and friends sitting throughout the cafe. Danny and I both agreed that this would also be a perfect cafe to come and work from, there are so many tables and plenty of space! Also with there being tamales to pick from as well you could actually get a decent bite here without just eating muffins and donuts all day!

Regrettable today we did not go for a tamale, but really wishing we had now looking back. We weren’t sure the time it would take, but it actually took our coffees long enough that I bet we could have waited and also got a tamale. For another trip!

Danny went with the vanilla bean latte and I picked the agave latte. We both agreed mine was better 🙂

  1. If there is ever a latte with honey I will 100% of the time pick it
  2. It’s typically always perfect with just a touch of sweetness!

The above completely applied here, this latte was a perfect blend of espresso, honey and steamed milk! I loved it and would drink it a million times over. We have gotten smarter with Dark Matter coffee and we both no longer will ask for the extra shots, their espresso bean is certainly strong enough to go around. I have also found it really throws off the flavor in the coffee when this extra shot is added too, I have finally started to lay off that kick.

The vanilla bean is still a delicious latte, but when compared sip to sip with the agave latte this one was overly sweet and tasted more like vanilla syrup than actually being sweetened with natural vanilla bean. It was a touch of a let down. Another menu item I really want to try next time as well is the Mexican hot chocolate! I saw a couple order this and it looked delicious and I bet given the authenticity of the cafe and all its touches that this has to be a rather killer beverage here!

Totally for our next trip, hot chocolate and tamales!

Has anyone else been to Caravanserai and tried the hot chocolate? How does it compare to others in Chicago?
